ABC’s of COLOR

• Primary Colors – Red, Blue, and Yellow. These are considered true or pure colors and other colors can be created by mixing other hues.

• Secondary Colors – Green, Orange and Purple. These colors are achieved by mixing two primary colors in equal amounts. Variations can occur when ‘white’ or ‘black’ is added to the secondary color.

• Tertiary Colors – Red-Orange, Red-Purple, Blue-Purple, Blue-Green and Yellow-Green.

• Active Colors - These colors can be found on the ‘warm’ side of the color wheel. Yellow, Orange and Red are colors that advance, stand out and can be intense. These colors can exhilarate your emotions and get your adrenaline going. So if you like these colors and the feeling you get from them try them in one of your rooms! These colors go well in kitchens, dining rooms, work studios, libraries, dens and home offices.

• Passive Colors – These colors can be found on the ‘cool’ side of the color wheel. Blue, Green and Purple will generate feelings of calm and tranquility. Because of the soothing nature of these colors they are ideal in bedrooms, private retreats, and common meeting areas of your home.

• Neutrals – These are considered to be the ‘non-colors’. Browns, Beiges, Grays and Whites. These colors typically neither activate nor pacify. They are colors that should be used to ‘bridge’ or ‘link’ other mood colored rooms together. They can be wonderful colors to use on trim & doors. Most rooms will look pleasing in this neutral color palette. These colors are great for re-sale!

• WHITES – This color does not have to be sterile! It can bring an airy, clean and serene feeling to any room. White is a great ‘backdrop’ for bold colored artwork or a contemporary room. Whites will have an undertone that is either ‘cool’ or warm’. Except for a ‘true’ bright white, most whites will have color tones that range from off white/beige white, pinky white, yellow white, mint green white, gray white, peach white or a violet white. At times the white paint chip may appear to be pastel in color but when you apply the color to the wall it will appear white. Be sure to be cautious about choosing the ‘right’ white before committing to the color on your walls.
